Jeannine
Taft, produce manager
At Niskayuna Co-op Market,
we think it’s
important to support
local farmers. We also want to offer our customers
the freshest produce available at the best prices.
That’s why
we carry as much local produce as possible.
Our local growers
We buy a wide selection of apples from Knights Orchard
in Burnt Hills, and The Country Garden, in Niskayuna,
supplies us with tomatoes, summer squash, cucumbers,
beans, peppers, cauliflower, peas and more. Depending
on the season, we also stock local bedding plants,
cut flowers, potted herbs and cactus.
Staying competitive
Buying from our store’s main
wholesaler, C&S,
ensures we can offer our customers competitive
prices and specialty items—like five varieties
of Ready Pac Bistro To Go salads (they even include
the fork!). We also carry Delmonte pre-sliced
fruits. Just grab a pack of cored, chunk pineapple,
strawberry halves or a fruit medley, and go!
Organically
grown
Many of our customers like
to buy organic. We like to make sure they
have plenty of organic produce to choose from. We
normally carry organic broccoli, potatoes,
carrots, mushrooms, apples, grapes, raspberries,
strawberries, romaine and celery hearts,
and bananas—and
our organic line is still growing!
We can even help with ideas
for cooking our produce!
Ever wondered what you can
do with a jicama (pronounced HEE-ka-mah). This
tuberous root is crunchy with a sweet nutty taste.
Our idea: Remove skin and slice in half or quarters.
Sprinkle with lime juice and cayenne pepper.
Jicama is delicious in salad or stir-fry, and
it stays crunch even when cooked. Enjoy!
Rit
Gabree, dairy supervisor
At
Niskayuna Co-op Market, “dairy” means
more than just milk. Much more. Of course,
we do carry three brands of milk—Mohawk Dairy, Elmhurst Dairy and Battenkill Valley Creamery —to keep prices
competitive. We have it delivered six times
a week, so it’s
always fresh. And we feature a half-gallon
on special every week. But we also carry
a wide variety of other dairy products.
In fact, we have at least a thousand different
items on our dairy shelves!
Serving
up soy
Many of our customers enjoy
soy products, so we keep a full line of Silk
brand items on hand, including Stonyfield Farm soy yogurts
and Silk soymilks you won’t see
in other stores, like Enhanced Silk soymilk,
which is fortified with extra vitamins and
minerals.
Keeping it local
We stock lots of local
favorites, like Cappiello cheeses from Schenectady, McCadam cheeses from Chateaugay and Cabot Creamery products from nearby Vermont. We also carry
five varieties of organic eggs. Our newest
brand comes from Eight Mile Creek Farm in Westerlo.
Open up a carton, and you’ll
see these eggs come in a variety of colors—all
sold together!
Winter, spring, summer,
fall
Here in upstate New York,
seasons change… and
so do our products. Watch for egg nogs and Christmas
cookies in the winter, fresh cider each fall
and Turkey Hill iced teas during the summer
months.
We care about our customers!
See something you like? You
should have no problem getting it—we stock our shelves carefully
so everything’s within easy reach! And if
you don’t see what you want, just ask. Most
new items are customer requests. Don’t be
shy—tell us what you’d like on our
shelves!
